This is the first International Mountain Day P³ is seeing. The United Nations General Assembly designated 11 December “International Mountain Day”. As of 2003, it has been observed every year to create awareness about the importance of mountains to life, to highlight the opportunities and constraints in mountain development and to build alliances that will bring positive change to mountain peoples and environments around the world.
The key messages are:
15 - 20 % of global tourism are attracted to mountains
Mountains cover 20% of the surface of Earth
56% of Biosphere reserves are located in mountains
Celebrate Mountains day and visit the many sites dedicated to the event.
Coinciding with International Mountain Day, the fifth Global Meeting of the Mountain Partnership is taking place at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy, where more than 150 representatives from mountainous countries, intergovernmental organizations and civil society will endorse concrete measures and policies to strengthen the resilience of mountain people and environments in the face of climate change. A Framework for Action is being launched to support concrete actions, put in place long-lasting processes, and establish policies to strengthen the resilience of mountain peoples and environments to ensure that sustainable mountain development is integrated into the 2030 Agenda and in the implementation of the Paris Agreement.
