P³ early career scientists
Adriana Cravo did her Bachelor in Biology, in Brazil and her Master in Wildlife Conservation, when she worked with road-killed animals. Now, she's doing her PhD in conservation and microbiology of amphibians. She's interested in the possible relationship between the associated skin microbiome of amphibians and the presence of two diseases caused by Ranavirus and
Batrachochytridium dendrobatidis. Additionally, she will compare the amphibian skin microbiome with the environmental microbiome identified in the lakes where these amphibians are found
Oliver Machate, the pollution scientist. His master in Environmental Chemistry and Health at the University of Copenhagen brought him in touch with anorganic molecules such as copper and zinc. For P³ he changed to organic pollutants and will investigate how they impact on plankton, microplankton, and ecosystem functioning and how their impact might change with a changing climate.
Judit Laufer has a background in biogeochemistry and is interested in understanding the microbiome as a key to ecosystem processes. As a PhD-student in P3-Projectshe will analyze the microbiome in mountain lake water samples using modern sequencing technologies and network approaches. She will compare the data of lakes ecosystems along different gradients (e.g. P³ region,altitude, exposure to pollution and pathogens, influence of farming or
frequent human contact) and investigate the potential connection between lake microbiomes and amphibian pathogens.
Lydia Mackenzie is a palaeoecologist who works with fossilized pollen and charcoal to reconstruct past vegetation communities and disturbance events. She is particularly interested in the long-term relationship between humans and the environment. Her postdoc will contribute to the P3 project by reconstructing land cover, disturbance events and climate change across the four mountain ecosystems during the Anthropocene.

Anna-Marie Klamt is a paleolimnologist with experience in total phosphorus (P) reconstruction (by diatoms) and sequential P extraction in lake sediments. Within P3 she will focus on the effects of past anthropogenic impacts on lake ecosystems by using invertebrate (cladocera) remains from sediment cores and stable isotope analysis. Her field work will be carried out in the Greater Hinggan Mountains in northeast China.

Marilen Haver is a PhD-student interested in the hydrology of mountain ecosystems. She will investigate key parameters in large scale mountain hydrology that are related to the health of aquatic ecosystems across the four P³ mountain ranges. She will use a modelling approach to describe mountain watershed functioning as well as to gain insight into how abiotic parameters (such as T°, water flow, pollution distribution) can influence the distribution and the ecology of amphibians and their living habitat.

Dirk S. Schmeller (PI) has a broad expertise in conservation biology and has been working in the Pyrenean Mountains for more than 10 years. Kunshan Bao is interested in study about past environmental changes and their causes, with a focus on the use of natural archives to investigate the fate and transport of anthropogenic pollutants in the environment and to reconstruct their pollution history. His broader interest is on integrity of ecological changes in freshwater ecosystem and their responses to climate change and the human activities.In P³, he will investigate the impact of landcover changes on the functioning of mountainous aquatic ecosystems using a paleolimnological approach.

The past research of Ji Shen developed from a paleolimnological approach, investigating sediment records in Chinese lakes and their significances for climatic and environmental evolution. His research on Northeast China lakes provided a detailed history of the East Asian summer monsoon variability and vegetation changes since the mid- to late Holocene. In P³, he will coordinate and supervise the PhD students and Postdocs in analyzing and interpreting the pollen record from lake sediment.

Werner Brack is environmental chemist by training. His group is focusing on the identification, quantification and assessment of environmental pollutants causing adverse effects to different biological systems. In P³, the group supports unraveling of cause-effect relationships between contamination (probably from atmospheric deposition) and amphibian decline in different mountain ranges by GC- and LC-HRMS analysis of water, sediment and biota samples from small mountain lakes.

Jan Friesen works in ecohydrology, remote sensing, and sensor development. He has been working in Oman and the Dhofar mountains since 2009. Gael Le Roux is an isotope ecogeochemist working . He is investigating *the fate of trace elements *(nutrients, contaminants) at different temporal and spatial scales and their effects on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. He is experienced in coupling isotope geochemistry and ecology or atmospheric chemistry and radioecology. For P3, Gael will supervise mainly the tasks on inorganic biogeochemistry of trace elements in mountain environments.

Pilar Durantez works as a field technician and logistic coordinator of several projects in the Pyrenees Mountains. Within P³, she brings her experience in lake coring, fish and water sampling as well as wetland ecological monitoring. Francois de Vleeschouwer uses terrestrial archives
to investigate the record of trace elements (nutrients, contaminants) at different spatial and temporal scales as well as their interactions with climatic and environmental factors. His role within P³ will be to bring his expertise in environmental géochemistry to solve questions linking human occcupation, vegetation cover, soil occupation and the fate of contaminents in mountainous environments.

Roman Teisserenc is an Environmental Biogeochemistry. He is particularly interested in terrestrial organic matter (TOM) dynamic in freshwater ecosystem. Focusing on organic matter fluxes and quality, he is also interested in contaminant fate associated with TOM. Within the P³ he will try to decipher the role of PHTE on aquatic eco-geochemistry (mainly fish).
Jose Miguel Sanchez Perez (CNRS EcoLab) is an Environmental Hydrogeochemist. He is particularly interested hydrological models including major nutrients, solid load in large catchments.He is co-supervising Marilen Haver's PhD.
Claudine Egger has a background in political economy and currently finishing her master thesis in Social Ecology where she develops a system-dynamic model for a NUTS3 region in Austria. She has co-developed an integrated socioecological model for a the Eisenwurzen region in Austria which will be used for P³.

Veronika Gaube is senior researcher at the Institute of Social Ecology (Alpen-Adria-University Klagenfurt-Wien-Graz). She finished her PhD in Social Ecology in 2009 and has 10 years of experience in interdisciplinary research linking socio-economic and ecological approaches in sustainability science. She is experienced in developing integrated socioecological models. These models combine agent-based and material/substance stock-flow modules to analyse the interactions between decisions of land users, land-use change, and socioecological flows of energy, materials or substances (e.g. C and N).

Christoph Plutzar is biologist, social ecologist and he holds an academic training in Geographic Information Systems. In the year 2004 he was one of the founder members of the Vienna Institute for Nature Conservation and Analyses. Since 2008 he works at the Institute of Social Ecology (Alpen-Adria-University

Helmut Haberl holds a doctorate in Ecology and a habilitation in Human Ecology. Since 1991 he is researcher, lecturer and project/scientific manager at the Institute of Social Ecology (Alpen-Adria-University Klagenfurt-Wien-Graz) where he became Associate professor in 2001. Since 2012 he is Director of the Institute of Social Ecology. His research focuses on theoretical issues of society-nature interaction, sustainable development, integrated land change science, socioeconomic metabolism and energy flow analysis, socio-ecological long-term research (LTSER) and GHG mitigation in agriculture, forestry and other land use (AFOLU). Among other assessment reports he is lead author of chapter 11 'Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Uses (AFOLU)', WGIII 'Mitigation', 5th Assessment Report (AR5) of the IPCC.

Andreas Mayer is sociologist and social ecologist. Since 2008 he works at the Institute of Social Ecology (Alpen-Adria-University Klagenfurt-Wien-Graz), working in the areas "Land Use and Colonization of Ecosystems" and "Social metabolism". The focus of his work is on the interlinkage between social metabolism and land use, and related trade-offs. He has
